Did you know that some of the steps you might take to save yourself some money on energy bills or help protect the environment can also help reduce the likelihood of having a claim on your home insurance? Installing new and efficient appliances, for example, means that you’ll be less likely to have maintenance issues that could damage your home or property. Additionally, you might even be eligible for certain discounts on your home insurance policy when you make energy efficient choices around the house.

Great tips Brooke! Last year we had an “Energy Audit” done by http://www.homeperformance.com First they came to measure the “before” state. They produced a report detailing all the areas of our house where we could see major efficiency improvements. We ended up replacing a couple windows, insulating a few rooms, and replaced the furnace. After the work was all done we got them to come back and reassess the energy efficiency of our house – the improvement was enough to net us a $800 rebate from the government, and a $250 rebate from Terasen. We were planning to do much of that work anyway, so it was a great way to help cut the cost.

I really enjoyed your clip on energy tips. How much can I save on my home insurance and how do I go about doing it? You mentioned thermostats and appliances, will my insurance company give me money toward the purchase of these new safer and energy efficient items? I’m looking forward to the next edition on coverage!

The amount you can save on your home insurance depends on who your insurance company is. I know that Vancity has a program called Pure Home Insurance and that BCAA is developing a program called GreenHouse. You should definitely check with your insurance broker as they should be able to tell you. Both the programs I just mentioned will provide you with coverage to install energy efficient appliances and eco-friendly material in your home if you have a loss. You would need to have bought the special coverage but it shouldn’t be that expensive. If you find out about a different program through your broker, please let us know.
